What is Health and Wellness ?
Health and wellness is an indispensable factor for each and every human being. Health is the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. Whereas Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of a more successful existence. Both of the terms are two different concepts that are quite variable, and their meanings are different.
Health comprises the diagnosis of a disease or illness, predisposition to a disease, and any unexpected injury. Wellness is an active process of growth and change to reach your fullest health and well-being.
It is associated with controlling risk factors that can harm a person, focusing on nutrition, having a balanced diet, and following spiritual practices that lead to holistic health.
Main risk factors effecting health and wellness
There are many risk factors which effect the overall performance of good health and wellness. Some of them are listed below:
- lack of physical activity
- poor nutrition
- use of tobacco
- excessive alcohol use
Lack of physical activity has clearly been shown to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and other conditions. Not getting enough physical activity can lead to heart disease, even for people who have no other risk factors. Not getting enough exercise and physical activity causes deconditioning of the body’s musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems and depresses mood, all of which lead to fatigue.

- Do activities, such as walking, jogging, or stair climbing that you can do based on the time that you have available.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Avoid junk food, salty food, oily food, alcohol, and smoking.
- Eat every 2-3 hours and avoid overeating.
Malnutrition means poor nutrition, is another example which effect health and wellness, most commonly this is caused by not eating enough or not eating enough of the right food to give your body the nutrients it needs. Also consuming unhealthy food and beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages and highly processed food, can lead to weight gain, obesity and other chronic conditions such as cancer.
The best way to prevent malnutrition is to eat a healthy, balanced diet to maintain proper health and wellness. Try not to miss or skip meals and aim to eat three small meals a day and two to three snacks a day. Take drinks after your meal, not before or during as that can fill you up. Symptoms of poor nutrition involve weight loss, reduced appetite, tiredness, and irritability.

- Try to eat more protein and fat, and less simple sugars.
- participate in light activity to stimulate your appetite.
- Avoid non-nutritious beverages, instead choose milk and juices.
Smoking or tobacco use is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases which affects in good health and wellness. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.
It is to be said that smokeless tobacco cause less risk, but smokeless tobacco is known to cause cancer and other health conditions, including: Bad breath and stained teeth. Bone loss around the teeth.
To quit smoking all of a sudden could be a difficult task ,but still you can gradually stop or avoid the use of tobacco through a wide kind of ways . One of the best ways to quit smoking is through a proper medication and an effective counselling.
excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including: High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems. Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum.
The harmful use of alcohol not only cause your health and wellness but can also result in harm to other people, such as family members, friends, co-workers and strangers. Alcohol consumption is a causal factor in more than 200 diseases, injuries and other health conditions.
Drinking alcohol is associated with a risk of developing health problems such as mental and behavioural disorders.
Alcohol consumption by an expectant mother may cause fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and pre-term birth complication.

Happiness will come only when we will be health and fit. But today we live in a world where we value things more than people, work more than family, food more than health and status more than life. We rush after money and social status and we forget about our health. This absurd attitude ruined our lives and it will continue to do so unless we open up our eyes and see the reality.
